CONCACAF has officially announced a sweeping format change for the 2027 CONCACAF Gold Cup, replacing the traditional four-group structure with two larger groups of eight teams. The upcoming tournament, scheduled to run from June 17 to July 11, 2027, will also feature Saudi Arabia as a guest nation competing alongside 15 regional qualifiers.

Revamped Group Stage Guarantees More Matches

Through last year's tournament, the Gold Cup featured 16 national teams divided into four groups of four. Under that previous system, the top two teams from each group advanced to the quarterfinals. Starting with the next edition, the 16 participating countries will be split into just two groups of eight.

The top four teams from each of these expanded groups will advance directly to the quarterfinals. Crucially, the new structure guarantees that all participating teams will play at least four matches, an increase from the three guaranteed games in previous editions.

"We are really excited about what this new format will bring to the tournament’s group stage," said Victor Montagliani. "Every match will matter, with teams facing a balanced mix of opponents and competing for a place in the knockout rounds."

Saudi Arabia Joins Regional Heavyweights

The next Gold Cup will feature 15 countries qualifying through the Nations League, alongside guest nation Saudi Arabia. The inclusion of the Saudi national team adds an intriguing international dynamic to the North American, Central American, and Caribbean championship.

Fans will discover the group stage matchups when the official draw for the 2027 tournament takes place on April 8. While it is expected that at least some games will be hosted in the United States, the exact host locations are not yet fully confirmed.

Building on the 2025 Edition

The format shift follows a highly competitive 2025 edition of the Gold Cup, which culminated in Mexico's men's national team defeating the U.S. men's national team (USMNT) 2-1 in Houston. With the expanded group stage, more guaranteed matches, and the addition of Saudi Arabia, the 2027 tournament promises a demanding path to the title for the region's traditional powerhouses.
