PSG Villarreal Champions League: Four goals in 17 minutes stun hosts
Paris Saint-Germain made a ruthless start at El Madrigal, punishing Villarreal errors to take control early. The defending champions did it while missing several important players.
PSG Villarreal Champions League action delivered a brutal opening spell on Tuesday, as Paris Saint-Germain raced into a 4-0 lead after just 17 minutes at El Madrigal. The defending champions were without several key players, but still overwhelmed Villarreal with four goals in an eight-minute burst.
Paris Saint-Germain arrived facing a test of squad strength, with four of its best players missing for the trip. That challenge did not show in the opening stages, as PSG punished Villarreal repeatedly and moved towards a 10th straight win in all competitions.
PSG score four in a devastating early spell
The first goal came in the 9th minute. Joao Neves poked home a loose ball after missing the initial corner into the box, giving PSG a fast breakthrough away from home.
Three minutes later, Desire Doue made it 2-0 in the 12th minute. Villarreal barely had time to recover before Senny Mayulu scored a minute later, stretching PSG’s advantage to three.
The fourth arrived in the 17th minute, when Fabian Ruiz slammed home to complete the early surge. By that point, PSG had turned the match into a mismatch and had taken a 4-0 lead before the midway point of the first half.
Villarreal mistakes punished from the back
PSG’s pressure was matched by Villarreal’s problems in possession. Three of the goals came from mistakes as Villarreal tried to play out from the back or were dispossessed in their own half.
That pattern shaped the opening phase at El Madrigal. PSG pressed and reacted quickly, while Villarreal’s errors gave the visitors repeated chances to attack close to goal.
The speed of the collapse was striking: all four goals were on the board by the 17th minute, with the decisive burst of scoring packed into only eight minutes.
Absences do not slow defending champions
The performance stood out because of the players missing from PSG’s squad. Ousmane Dembélé, Marquinhos and Nuno Mendes were absent because of thigh injuries.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was also unavailable as a long-term absentee with a ruptured ACL. Even without those names, PSG coped comfortably in the early stages and showed the depth that has kept them at the top of the Champions League standings entering the fourth round of games.
The defending champions started that round in first place, and their ruthless opening against Villarreal underlined why they remain a major force in the competition.
What it means for PSG
PSG’s fast start at El Madrigal put them in command and kept them on course for a 10th straight win in all competitions. More importantly, it showed that even with major absences, the team still had enough quality to dominate a Champions League away match from the opening minutes.
