U.S. Men's Football Targets 2028 Olympics Under Steve Cherundolo
U.S. football officials are shifting their focus toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the 2030 World Cup. Following a round of 16 run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a new generation of blue-chip teenagers has already led the U.S. men's national team to four convincing wins in their first four post-tournament games.
Strategic Leadership and Coaching Appointments
Dan Helfrich, the U.S. Soccer COO and former Deloitte executive, has overseen the federation's day-to-day operations since January. Alongside CEO JT Batson, Helfrich made the decision to sign senior team coach Mauricio Pochettino to a new four-year contract following the recent World Cup campaign.
Helfrich also spearheaded the recruitment of Steve Cherundolo to lead the American men at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Cherundolo brings significant experience to the role, having featured as a three-time former U.S. World Cup defender before becoming an MLS Cup-winning coach with LAFC in 2022.
Building the 2028 Olympic Squad
The 2028 Olympics men's football tournament will feature a 12-nation format. The competition is primarily an under-23 event, though three overage players are permitted per team. Emerging talents such as Cavan Sullivan and Julian Hall could be key members of the hosts' squad as they prepare for the global stage.
Expectations for the team are high ahead of the home tournament.
"Medaling is very realistic"
stated Helfrich, underlining the federation's ambitions.
The men's team will look to emulate the historic success of the U.S. women's national team, who have won gold at five of eight Olympic tournaments, including the games in Paris in 2024. Additionally, regional rival Mexico previously won the men's Olympic tournament in London in 2012, highlighting the potential for North American success at the Games.
Capitalising on World Cup Momentum
The preparations for 2028 and 2030 are fueled by a surge in national interest. According to a Nielsen Media Research report, the 2026 FIFA World Cup shattered viewership numbers across the United States. The landmark tournament created 10 million new U.S. Soccer supporters, providing a robust foundation for the federation as it builds toward the next decade of international football.
